NEW YORK (AP) — Denny Laine, a British singer, songwriter and guitarist who performed in an early, pop-oriented version of the Moody Blues and was later Paul McCartney's longtime sideman in the ex-Beatle's solo band Wings, has died at age 79. Laine, inducted five years ago into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Moody Blues, died Tuesday in Naples, Florida. His death comes almost exactly 50 years after the release of McCartney's acclaimed “Band On the Run” album, on which Laine played guitar and provided backing vocals. The Moody Blues then turned to the ambitious, classically influenced sounds of “Nights in White Satin" and other songs. Founded in 1971, the year after the Beatles broke up, Wings went through various personnel changes over the following decade, with Laine, McCartney and McCartney's wife, Linda.

asked Kristen Brengel of the National Parks Conservation Association, noting that visitors on the ground far outnumber those overhead. Congress passed another round of legislation in 2000 with a goal of setting rules in other national parks. Historically, some of the nation's busiest spots for tour operators are Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and Haleakala National Park. But Brengel of the National Parks Conservation Association said the resistance doesn't have much traction. An amendment to the FAA reauthorization bill that would have required the agency to factor in the economics of commercial air tours over national parks failed in July, she said.

The kidnappers planned to ransom the Chowchilla kids, all between the ages of 5 and 14 years old, for $5 million. After all, the field of child trauma psychiatry was still in its infancy. One mental health professional predicted that that only one of the 26 would be emotionally affected by the kidnappings. Much like with adults, Terr described how the consequences of kids’ trauma could linger, with implications reaching far into adulthood. After the school shootings in Columbine and Sandy Hook, for instance, mental health counselors were on the front lines to help survivors.

A video of armed personnel climbing aboard a bulk carrier from three smaller motorboats has been falsely presented online as showing Yemen’s Houthis hijacking a cargo ship in the Red Sea in mid-November. The video can be dated to at least June 2022, more than a year before the Red Sea incident. On Nov. 20, the Houthis released video of armed men seizing the Galaxy Leader, a British-owned and Japanese-operated cargo ship that the rebels described as being Israeli. The vessel in the Houthis video does not resemble the one in the social media posts. The video dates to at least June 2022, thus predating the Houthis seizure of the Galaxy Leader.

A Houthi fighter holds up a pistol in the cargo area of the Galaxy Leader cargo ship in the Red Sea in this photo released November 20, 2023. Kirby's comment was significant because one of the Biden administration's first acts after taking office in January 2021 was revoking terrorist designations of the Houthis over fears the sanctions they carried could worsen Yemen's humanitarian crisis. Kirby called the Houthis' seizure of the vessel a "flagrant violation of international law" in which "Iran is complicit." "In light of this, we have begun a review of potential terrorist designations and we will be considering other options as well with our allies and partners as well," Kirby said at a White House press briefing. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Feb. 12, 2021, revoked the designations in "recognition of the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen."

Ray Dalio once ordered a probe into urine on the men's room floor, a new book says. Bridgewater said Dalio did complain about restroom tidiness, but the book passage is "exaggerated" and "false." In "The Fund: Ray Dalio, Bridgewater Associates, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend," Copeland wrote that Dalio once excused himself from a meeting to use the restroom and he found pee on the floor. "It was a true circus," Copeland wrote in the book. Bridgewater even brought in new urinals and added stickers as targets, the book said, and later reviewed their exact placement.

Four scientists told Insider his plan is bad for technical, scientific, and ethical reasons. Yes, experts agree we might want to settle other worlds, but Mars might not be our best bet, at least not now, four scientists told Insider. SpaceX's first priority is "establishing a cargo route to Mars," Musk told the Washington Post in 2016. From Mars, Musk told the IAC, people could go to the asteroid belts, the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and the Kuiper belt. Microsoft, Meta, and more are touting AI assistants that are far more advanced than Siri and Alexa. These AI assistants have the potential to deal with tedious digital tasks, or "crapmin." From Microsoft to Meta, tech companies leading the charge in AI are starting to make clear what the future of AI looks like to them. Meta's AI assistant "surfaces options directly in the chat, so you can decide as a group which location to explore." He can be seen moving past a line of Capitol Police at the barricades, but never actually goes inside the Capitol. Federal prosecutors have not charged Mr. Epps with a crime, focusing instead on the more than 1,000 other demonstrators who acted violently or were trespassing in the Capitol. The Justice Department’s sprawling investigation into the attack remains open, however, and Mr. Epps could still be indicted. Yet for more than 18 months, Mr. Carlson insisted that the lack of charges against Mr. Epps could mean only one thing: that he was being protected because he was a secret government agent. There was “no rational explanation,” Mr. Carlson told his audience, why this “mysterious figure” who “helped stage-manage the insurrection” had not been charged.

Meta last May opened its first retail store within its Burlingame office campus. Meta's nascent strategy to launch its own retail stores is already being undone, according to people familiar with the situation. As part of the company's metaverse strategy, the Meta Store serves mainly as a showroom for its Quest headset, where people can test out the hardware and purchase it. It was thought upon its opening to be the beginning of Meta's retail ambitions. It has also discontinued the sale of its Portal video chat device, previously part of its retail store, and will not be releasing a planned watch product.

To figure out what GPT-4 has read, they quizzed it on its knowledge of various books, as if it were a high-school English student. One way to answer the question is to look for information that could have come from only one place. Genre — sci-fi, mystery, romance, horror — is, broadly speaking, more interesting, partially because these books have plots where things actually happen. Bamman's GPT-4 list is a Borgesian library of episodic connections, cliffhangers, third-act complications, and characters taking arms against seas of troubles (and whales). See what a bot makes of Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun," maybe, or Sheri Tepper's "Grass."
Google has stopped selling its Glass Enterprise smart glasses, the company announced on Wednesday on its website. Glass Enterprise was the successor to Google Glass, a lightweight glasses product that displayed tiny bits of information on a transparent screen in the user's field of view. Google's retreat comes as rivals, including Meta and Apple , are investing in augmented reality and virtual reality technology which could end up in devices that are much more sophisticated Google Glass. The discontinuation of Glass does not mean that Google has given up on augmented reality or smartglasses, though. Last summer, Google previewed a different pair of smartglasses that could translate and transcribe speech in real-time, and said it would continue to test augmented reality glasses prototypes in public.
